When to pick it
Pure #000 rather than near-black, so on an OLED screen the panel edge genuinely disappears and only the type is lit. It is a real effect on a phone and invisible on a desktop LCD — pick it if your traffic is mobile.
How it is built
True black with borders carrying every bit of the structure. The usual near-black is chosen to avoid smearing on OLED during scroll; here that is accepted in exchange for the effect.
Accessibility
21:1, the maximum possible. Some readers find pure black on white halation uncomfortable, which is the honest trade-off.
